Scorpio Birthstones

Scorpio doesn't have one settled birthstone. The traditional tropical zodiac assigns Beryl; the modern jewelry trade assignsTopaz instead. Both are attested, dated conventions — not ancient absolutes — and the comparison and sourcing below show exactly where each one comes from.

Traditional tropical zodiac: This list derives from the historical monthly birthstone table keyed to each sign's starting month, so it inherits that table's lack of a single standardising source.

Modern jewellery-trade zodiac: This is a contemporary retail convention mapping the current monthly list onto zodiac date ranges — a 20th/21st-century commercial construct, not an ancient astrological tradition.

The stones themselves

Beryl (traditional tropical zodiac)

Beryl is its own mineral species. Mohs hardness: 7.5–8. Color: Colourless, Green, Blue, Yellow, Pink, and Multicolour. Beryl is the parent mineral species; its gem varieties include emerald (green), aquamarine (blue), morganite (pink), heliodor (yellow), and colourless goshenite.

Topaz (modern jewelry-trade zodiac)

Topaz is its own mineral species. Mohs hardness: 8. Color: Yellow, Blue, Brown, and Colourless. Natural "imperial" topaz (pink to orange-red) is rare; the great majority of blue topaz in jewelry is colorless topaz that has been irradiated and heat-treated.

Why Scorpio has two different stones

Scorpio begins in October. The historical October list named Opal and Aquamarine. Aquamarine is a variety of Beryl, the parent mineral species that the traditional tropical zodiac lists for Scorpio — the same underlying material, named at two different levels of specificity.

The modern jewelry-trade list works differently: rather than drawing on the historical table, it draws on the current monthly birthstone table instead. Scorpio ends in November, and its modern stone, Topaz, matches the current US birthstone table for November — the month that holds most of Scorpio's date range.

Western vs. Vedic: which sign are you really?

The dates above use the tropical zodiac, the system Western astrology — and this page — is built on. The sidereal zodiac used in Vedic (Jyotish) astrology runs roughly 23 days behind it, because it tracks the actual position of the constellations rather than the seasons. If you were born under tropical Scorpio (October 23 – November 21), your sidereal placement is often Libra instead — especially for birthdays in the first few weeks of the range. We have not sourced Vedic birthstone assignments for Libra or any other sign, so this is a note about the sign shift only, not a birthstone recommendation.

Scorpio birthstone FAQ

What is the Scorpio birthstone?
There isn't one settled answer. The traditional tropical zodiac (October 23 – November 21) names Beryl; the modern jewelry-trade convention names Topaz instead. Both are sourced, dated lists — see the comparison table above.
Why do the two zodiac birthstone lists disagree for Scorpio?
Scorpio's traditional stone, Beryl, comes from the historical October birthstone list — the month Scorpio begins in. Its modern stone, Topaz, comes from the separate current monthly birthstone table instead. The disagreement between the two zodiac lists is really the historical list diverging from the modern one; each sign inherits that divergence from its date range.
What color is Topaz, Scorpio's modern birthstone?
Topaz occurs in yellow, blue, brown, and colourless tones, with a Mohs hardness of 8.
Is my Vedic sign the same as Scorpio?
Not necessarily. The sidereal zodiac used in Vedic astrology runs roughly 23 days behind the tropical zodiac, so a birth date in tropical Scorpio often falls under sidereal Libra instead. We have not sourced Vedic birthstone assignments, so this concerns the sign only, not a stone recommendation.
Is aquamarine the same as beryl?
Yes, in the sense that matters here. Beryl is the mineral species, and aquamarine is its blue variety (emerald is the green variety). The historical October list names aquamarine specifically; the tropical zodiac's Scorpio entry names the parent species, beryl — the same underlying material, described at two levels of specificity.
