Emerald is the green variety of beryl, colored by trace chromium and/or vanadium, and it is one of the very few birthstones on this site with essentially unanimous modern support: the historical list, US 1912, UK 2013, and US current systems all name emerald for May, with the UK list adding chrysoprase as a secondary option. That kind of consensus is rare enough among birthstone traditions that it’s worth noting on its own.

Species and variety. Emerald shares its parent species, beryl (Be3Al2Si6O18), with aquamarine, morganite, and heliodor — the hexagonal crystal structure and roughly 7.5–8 hardness are common to all of them, and only the trace coloring elements differ. Chromium and vanadium are comparatively rare and structurally disruptive impurities, which is a major reason emeralds are so consistently included: the same chemistry that produces the green also tends to produce internal fractures and growth irregularities as the crystal forms.

Appearance and color range. Fine emerald shows a vivid, slightly bluish green with even saturation; paler or more yellowish-green beryl, even if chromium-colored, is often sold under other names or as lower-grade emerald rather than commanding top prices. Visible inclusions — collectively called “jardin,” garden, in the trade — are so typical of the species that an unusually clean, large emerald is treated with more suspicion than admiration by experienced buyers, since it may indicate synthetic origin or a different material altogether.

Hardness and everyday care. At 7.5–8 on the Mohs scale, emerald’s raw hardness number looks similar to aquamarine’s, but its practical toughness is usually much lower because of its characteristic inclusions and fractures — a heavily included emerald can chip surprisingly easily despite the number on the hardness scale. Most emeralds sold in jewelry are treated with oil or resin to fill surface-reaching fractures and improve apparent clarity, a treatment so standard it is assumed unless a stone is specifically described as untreated; because of this, emerald jewelry is generally better suited to earrings and pendants than to a ring subjected to daily knocks, and should never be cleaned ultrasonically.

Where it is found. Colombia has historically produced the finest and most sought-after emeralds, with major additional production from Zambia, Brazil, Afghanistan, Ethiopia, and Russia.

Birthstone role. Beyond its rare cross-system consensus for May, emerald is also the traditional tropical-zodiac stone for Cancer — and it is the single, deliberate exception to the pattern that explains every other tropical-zodiac assignment on this site. Cancer begins in June, whose historical monthly entry is cat’s eye, turquoise, and agate, not emerald; the tropical zodiac’s Cancer/emerald pairing does not derive from that month-keying rule the way the other eleven signs do.
