Amber isn’t a mineral at all. That classification gap matters more here than it does for most stones on this site. It’s fossilized tree resin — organic material that oozed from ancient conifers and other resin-producing trees.

It then hardened and slowly polymerized over millions of years underground into the amorphous, glassy material sold as a gem today. Because it never formed through crystallization, it has no crystal system, and because it’s a variable organic polymer rather than a defined compound, it has no single chemical formula either. Both fields are genuinely null, rather than facts this page is missing.

Pearl is the only other organic material cataloged on this site. However, pearl forms through a living organism’s secretions rather than resin fossilization. As a result, the two arrive at “organic” by very different routes.

That organic origin also explains amber’s most practical property: it’s soft. At Mohs 2 to 2.5, it’s among the softest materials regularly worn as a gem. It’s soft enough that a fingernail (itself close to Mohs 2.5) can leave a mark on it.

As a result, this rules out cutting facets that need to survive daily wear the way a harder stone’s would. It also means amber jewelry needs real care around abrasion, heat, and solvents — it can even be damaged by some perfumes and cleaning products. Its refractive index is correspondingly low and narrow, at 1.54 to 1.55.

Amber’s color runs through yellow, orange, and brown tones. Some pieces also preserve trapped insects or plant fragments from the moment the resin was still fluid. That feature has made certain specimens scientifically valuable as well as decorative.

The Baltic region — Russia, Lithuania, and Poland — is the best-known source of amber in general use, including material dated to around 44 million years old. The Dominican Republic, meanwhile, produces amber especially prized for the clarity of its inclusions. Myanmar (Burma) produces some of the oldest commercially significant amber, roughly 99 million years old.
